Studying part-time: how enrollment level affects grants

Many adult learners study part-time. Enrollment level is one of the things grant programs look at.

What enrollment level means

Schools define full-time, three-quarter-time, half-time and less-than-half-time in credits. Ask your school for its definitions.

How grants respond

The Federal Pell Grant, for example, is generally adjusted for enrollment level. Some state and campus grants require a minimum level.

Before changing your course load

  • Ask how a change would affect your grant.
  • Ask about deadlines for adding or dropping classes.
  • Ask whether summer terms count.

Where to ask

The financial aid office at your school can explain how its rules apply to you.
